Winter is tough for a lot of people – an estimated 1 in 5 (yup, that’s a full 20%) of North Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, known as SAD.
According to Psychology Today, the symptoms of SAD include sleepiness, carb cravings, difficulty concentrating, feelings of depression, anxiety, irritability, weight gain, lethargy, decreased libido, and hyperphagia (increased consumption of food). The prevalence of SAD has been linked to the lack of sunshine during the winter months. Depending on the severity of symptoms, there are several treatment options available – including light therapy and, in some cases, medications – and you should absolutely talk to your doctor if you are suffering. But know this: for minor cases of the ‘winter blues’, exercise can help.

We say it often, and it's true: you can have a great workout just about anywhere. But if you've got a pool (or other body of water) at your disposal, as some of us do at this time of year, well, your workout options - and their fun factor - just multiplied. Water workouts are NOT just for the senior set - anyone can reap serious benefits. Here's how.
There are so many benefits to working out with a Nielsen Fitness personal trainer, one of which a client of ours has illustrated perfectly for us: portability. The two photos below were taken by a dedicated client of ours – the first while he was on vacation in Italy last month, and the second just this past weekend in Ireland. Proof positive that it’s possible to keep up with health and fitness goals while traveling, and that you don’t need a gym or any bulky equipment to have an effective and fun workout! PS: This client is using one of our favourite pieces of equipment: a TRX, which is an excellent tool for more advanced movements and strength building. Runners are a dedicated bunch. Most pound the pavement in every kind of weather: rain, snow, hail and even the blazing heat. But did you know that running in the hot summer heat can actually be hazardous to your health if not approached correctly? It absolutely can – here’s an overview of how and why, and what you can do to minimize your risk this summer season.
