How to make fitness resolutions that stick

1/6/2015

It’s that time of year again.  The most common New Year’s resolution for Canadians is to get fit.  Unfortunately, the vast majority do not succeed.  Here’s some practical advice for making your fitness resolutions stick – once and for all – in 2015.
Picture
  1. Set small, specific goals.  Choosing to “get fit” isn’t nearly specific enough; instead, pick smaller and more achievable goals (it’s ok to have more than one at a time) and set specific and realistic deadlines.  You’ll feel great when you reach that first milestone and motivated to move onto the next.

  2. Don’t go overboard at the beginning.  Overloading your schedule with workouts when you’re not used to it can lead to burnout, boredom, or injury and can leave you resenting your fitness goals. Instead, think about what will work into your routine long-term.

  3. Know yourself.  Most of us know deep down what our weaknesses are.  Try to schedule your workouts for the times of day you know you’re at your best and most alert, and pick activities that suit your personality.  Also, if you are motivated by groups, consider enlisting a friend to be your workout buddy.  Not only will it be more fun for you, but it is hugely motivating to know that someone else is counting on you to show up.

  4. Choose your investment wisely.  Even though that gym membership or piece of equipment may seem like the answer, be sure you’re going to use it.  90% of people that join a gym don’t even go once/month, and on average most home equipment is used 5x/year. Although personal training may seem more expensive at first glance, most of our clients will tell you it’s money well-spent.  It’s our job to keep you accountable and on-track, and we make sure you get the most out of every workout, and every dollar you invest.

  5. And finally: Reward yourself and celebrate! Each time you reach one of your mini-goals, indulge - but not in food!  Treat yourself to a special outing, activity, or purchase.

If you want this to be the last year you resolve to get fit and healthy, we’re here to help.  Contact us today for your free consultation.
